The European Commission has identified the most sought-after tourist destinations in Portugal during the winter, throughout the year, and in both periods combined, with the North, Lisbon, and Algarve regions standing out as favorites.
The report, covering data from 2022 and 2023, emphasizes trends in overnight stays, serving as a benchmark for tourism dynamics during the festive season. Three key parameters were analyzed: regions most popular year-round, regions with consistent winter appeal, and those with the highest concentration of stays in winter months.
Mallorca led the rankings in 2023, with over 51 million overnight stays between December 2022 and November 2023, followed by Paris (44 million) and Rome (41 million). Berlin, Croatia’s Istrian peninsula, Amsterdam, and Greece’s Cyclades islands also stood out, recording between 25 and 29 million stays.
Increases compared to 2019 were notable in destinations such as Copenhagen, Cork, Munich, Lanzarote, Porto, and Seine-et-Marne, France, with gains ranging between 3.1 and 5.5 million overnight stays, underscoring a strong recovery in travel demand.
Even during the coldest months, Portugal shines as a prime winter destination. The Northern region was among Europe’s top performers for winter stays between December 2022 and February 2023, while Lisbon maintained its reputation as a year-round and winter favorite, rivaling destinations like Andalusia and Catalonia in Spain.
