Portugal received 26.5 million non-resident tourists in 2023, an increase of 19.2% compared to 2022 and 7.7% above the numbers of 2019, the year before the pandemic, according to information released this Monday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
According to the "Tourism Statistics 2023," INE highlights that 2023 showed a strong recovery for the sector after the crisis caused by COVID-19, surpassing the record numbers of 2019 in several key indicators.
Last year, tourist accommodation establishments, including hotels, local lodging, and rural/housing tourism, registered a 20.0% increase in total revenue and a 21.4% increase in accommodation revenue, totaling 6,015.3 million euros and 4,622.6 million euros, respectively.
INE notes that these results reflect an average annual growth of 8.8% in total revenue and 9.4% in accommodation revenue since 2019.
Additionally, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) rose to 64.8 euros, marking a 15.4% increase, while the average revenue per occupied room reached 113.0 euros, a 9.1% increase.
