Discover Alentejo Gastronomy: A Top Culinary Destination.
Portugal has once again been recognized on TasteAtlas! The Alentejo region secured 9th place among the top 100 gastronomic destinations of 2024, with an impressive 4.36-star rating out of five. Last year, this renowned online guide to traditional cuisine also crowned the pastel de nata as the best pastry in the world.

The Alentejo owes its position to iconic dishes such as sopa de cação, açorda à alentejana, tomato soup, Alentejo bread, and cured ham, along with traditional desserts like azevias, tibornas, pão de rala, and porquinho doce.
The guide also highlights other celebrated Portuguese dishes that contributed to this achievement, including Vendas Novas' bifanas, Almeirim's sopa de pedra, Setúbal's fried cuttlefish and muscat wine, Azeitão’s tortas and cheese, and Sesimbra’s farinha torrada—all from the southern regions, though outside the Alentejo.
Other Portuguese regions that made the global ranking include Trás-os-Montes (14th), Algarve (20th), and the Azores (51st). Cities like Bragança (80th), Vila Real (81st), and Santarém (91st) were also recognized for their traditional culinary offerings.
